December 24, 2014. Wolves in a tangled bank, by Cristina Eisenberg. A very interesting article, concluding with “Large, meat-eating animals improve the health of plant communities and provide food subsidies for the many species that scavenge on their kills.”
December 18, 2014. Protect Yellowstone buffalo from hunting season. A well written and accurate article in the Washington Post showing what a waste of tax-payers $$ the bison-management plan is around Yellowstone National Park to, as they say, “empower a livestock bureaucracy that is institutionally biased against buffalo”.
21 November 2014. Hunters in Grand Teton National Park doing illegal behaviors (herding and shooting at moving elk) in front of wildlife watchers. This is yet another egregious display of catering to the consumptive user group by allowing hunters into a world famous national park. I can only imagine the anger that the wildlife watchers must have had considering that there are hardly any places designed as no-hunting wildlife watching areas – you’d think that a world famous national park would qualify. And to make matters worse, minimal fines were associated with this event. In fact, the 4 hunters that were fined (an undisclosed amount) for hunting on the side of a road are allowed to continue hunting in the park. Unbelievable.
14 November 2014. Endangered Species Act protections sought for Yellowstone bison. It would be phenomenal if this went through but it is highly unlikely that the USFWS will accept this petition to keep Yellowstone bison wild and allow them to expand their range outside the park to ecological effective densities in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem.
22 September 2014. Montana man brags on Facebook about running over wolves. This is very disturbing and I especially like (and appreciate) Brooks Fahy’s quotes about the subconscious of a person doing a deliberate act such as what is described. I bet this person will get to keep his Montana hunting license despite his recklessness.
12 September 2014. Collaring the wild. Biologists have been tracking wolves in the Northern Rockies for two decades, but the species doesn’t always like to stay on the grid. This is a long but good article on the values of radio-collared study subjects. Doug Smith, of Yellowstone National Park, is quoted throughout the article.
8 September 2014. Yellowstone Devil Dog full length feature film (31 min). This is a film on a pretty famous wolf, 755M, who is still alive in Yellowstone National Park. He was the mate to the famous and now deceased ’06 female’ (wolf 832F). I must say I am impressed with the film, especially considering that Justin Myhre is a high school junior. He has spent the last five years pursuing his passion for wildlife through hands-on research projects and by producing documentaries. This latest film is a two-year labor of love that centered upon one of his favorite areas to visit – Yellowstone. Justin hopes that the film draws attention to the ongoing plight of the native wolves who call Yellowstone home.
4 September 2014. Silencing the Thunder. A powerful 26 min video on the tragedy associated with slaughtering bison in and around Yellowstone National Park. I hope many people watch this and put an end to an unnecessary action; let bison roam! A particularly touching part is at the 11 min mark when bison mourn a fall (shot dead) comrade, something seen in elephants as well.
28 August 2014. Film trailer (1 min long) for “Yellowstone Devil Dog”, produced by Justin Myhre. This is a very cool teaser in anticipation of the 31 min feature length film to be released next week. It features Wolf 755M and some of my pictures of him appear in the film. 755M was the mate to famous Wolf 832F, also called the ’06 female’, whom was shot by a hunter Dec. 2012 outside of the park. He has struggled to find a stable family since his loss nearly 2 years ago.
18 June 2014. Bison in Wyoming don’t trigger the irrational behavior of livestock interests as seen in Montana. This is a great story on how WY is coexisting with a growing herd of wild bison (850 and counting) around Grand Teton National Park.
27 May 2014. Great NPR interview on the famous wolf the ’06 female’. It is 18 min long and features Rick McIntyre and Doug Smith, biologist and leader of the Yellowstone Wolf Project, respectively. It was great to hear 2 biologists describe an individual and it further reinforces the importance of Yellowstone, not just for the animals’ sanctuary but for the scientists. I have been criticized for making similar comments and that I am too subjective all while my state game agency repeatedly takes my permits away essentially because I care for the animals I study. It is nice to know there are places where democracy rules and people can speak freely as Rick and Doug do about 06 without fear of having their career destroyed…. The park is great in more ways than one!

6 March 2014. Man blocks road to Yellowstone bison trap. I am convinced that we are losing our democracy in managing wildlife and the fact that Yellowstone National Park, our world premier wildlife park, is withholding information on their bison slaughter is a case in point. 4 March 2014. Weighing in on wolves. An interesting article in Montana Outdoors about striking the balance between pro- and anti-wolf groups. My only comment that I’d like to add is that it is obvious that Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks is completely catering to the anti-side as of now and dramatically trying to reduce their ~600 wolves, all while there are many 1000s of bears and cougars in their state. That is not the ‘North American Model of Wildlife Management’ that they purport they will manage wolves under – it is persecution and treating them like a nuisance species.
21 February 2014. How wolves changed the flow of rivers. A little dramatic, but an illustrative 4.5 min video on the effects that Yellowstone’s wolves have had to the ecosystem. Be aware that the narrator uses the term deer for any ungulate, especially elk which are indeed in the deer (Cervidae) family but are rarely called “deer”.
20 February 2014. Yellowstone ships more bison (17 this time) to slaughter. They seem to be trying to loosen the tension by giving them to Native American tribes but people aren’t blind: this is a national travesty happening on our public lands using our tax dollars. Disgraceful.

January 14, 2014. She wolf. This is an exciting documentary appearing this Sunday (1/19) at 9 PM (ET). It is a film (by Bob Landis) on the “06 female”. She was shot outside of the park last December (2012) and was one of the most famous wolves in the world before that.
