2013 Field Updates

December 19, 2013. Idaho wolf and coyote derby. This is not in, but near, the Yellowstone region. It is nice that people are speaking up on this matter. There is even a petition to stop this barbaric contest.

December 19, 2013. Bison deserve better. A nice letter to the editor…

December 8, 2013. Lies and misinformation on brucellosis issue. Another great editorial from the Yellowstone area.

December 8, 2013. Montanans, tourist and Americans tired of atrocities against bison. A great editorial from the Yellowstone area.

December 5, 2013. A modern tale of wolf & man. The crux of the 26 min film is trying to get a diverse assemblage of people to figure out a way to coexist with wildlife, including wolves. The video was produced in March 2012 but I just became aware of it.

December 5, 2013. Death of Yellowstone’s most famous wolf a sign of things to come. This is truly a sad state of affairs after 40 years and millions of dollars spent restoring wolves, the same prejudice, hatred, and ignorance that exterminated them is again rearing its ugly head.

November 22, 2013. Montana livestock dept to vaccinate (Yellowstone) park bison. This plan is nonsense and here is my letter to the governor of MT to explain my displeasure: Yesterday, the Montana Department of Livestock Vet. Marty Zaluski announced yesterday he intends on unilaterally hazing, capturing and vaccinating  some of the bison that enter Montana from Yellowstone National Park.  This is a policy that was reviewed by a national scientific panel and found to be a waste of time and resources.  It is also one more attempt to manage wild bison as domestic livestock.  This unilateral proposal by the Department of Livestock flies in the face of sound science and recommendations from the diverse Bison Citizen’s Working Group as well as Native American Tribes, Yellowstone Park officials and the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks.  This is an outrageous step backwards and a complete waste of time and resources. I believe it gives your state a black eye and makes them ultimately look like racist jerks. Please coral these renegades to common sense. While I spend most of my 2-3 weeks a year in Montana in YNP I would be glad to spend it in more places where wild bison live and aren’t artificially managed like the current canned hunts occurring at the border of our famous park.

November 22, 2013. Antelope learn to look both ways before crossing the street. This is a highly encouraging article about restoring ancient wildlife migrations by allowing animals like deer and pronghorn to cross highways without getting hit and killed by cars, saving both animals and people in the process. The majority of this article focuses on the Grand Teton region south of Yellowstone National Park.

November 15, 2013. U.S. destroys 6 tons of ivory to better protect elephants. While I fully support those efforts, does the USFWS every think about what is happening in this country: wolves are getting slaughtered by the day and bison aren’t allowed to roam freely outside of national parks – yet bison are sadly used as an example. That would be like putting most elephants into captivity (which happened with a lot of bison) and calling that recovery.

September 9, 2013. Wolves need protection to fully recover. A very well written article from the Salt Lake Tribune.

September 4, 2013. Murder of Yellowstone wolves threatens area renaissance. Interesting article…

June 28, 2013. Documents show that state wildlife officials lobbied to limit wolf restoration. What a bunch of filthy people, both state wildlife agencies and the federal government. Any of these agencies that espouse the “North American Model of Wildlife Management” are hypocrites. They say that because they think they are dictators and can do what they want and limit the restoration of certain animals, like wolves, and allow the slaughter of other animals, like coyotes. It is much more about politics than science determining much of wildlife management, especially managing wolves in the Rockies.

June 7, 2013. Two bull (male) bison killed outside of Yellowstone National Park. What a ridiculous section of government the MT Dept. of Livestock is. From the outside they look like the most intolerant group, sort of like the Klu Klux Klan. The fact that bison aren’t allowed outside of Yellowstone is discrimination and the law should be changed and soon. Here is a great response to the topic.

May 22, 2013. Lack of civility from Montana DOL is appalling. A great letter to the editor on an outdated agency that needs to be reformed.

May 22, 2013. Montana Dept. of Livestock display of hypocrosity. Here are folks that are generally anti-government and pro-private property rights yet they knock on a private home and tell them that they will be chasing bison (using our tax dollars) for essentially no reason off of their private land. It really is pathetic. After that 1.5 minute video let it keep running and there will be a 5 minute clip showing this hazing, titled “A Buffalo’s trail of tears”.

A 5 minute video about Montana Dept. of Livestock using (wasting) tax-payers dollars to haze bison from their native land. This reminds me so much of racism and hatred of another being. It is very sad, and still persists to this day. Please email the governor of Montana (governor@mt.gov) to explain your disapproval of this unnecessary action by some government thugs.

May 16, 2013. Trout invasion behind park’s elk decline. Yet another interesting theory on another factor affecting elk that is NOT wolf related. Yet state game agencies still manage wolves to minimal numbers and do not promote them as an important wildlife species.

May 8, 2013. Gardiner, MT man (baits and) kills Yellowstone Park wolf. People never cease to amaze me. He baits wolves to his property then gets a free pass to kill wolves for not protecting his property from them. This is another perfect example of “Tragedy of the Commons” where individual interests are put ahead of the thousands of people that visit this region to see live wolves.

April 29, 2013. Please visit the link on my website (Book Project) as my new book (My Yellowstone Experience) is now printed and ready to ship. It makes a great gift!

March 13, 2013. Dan Brister of Buffalo Field Campaign writes about the bills targeted against native Montana bison. Help defeat these unfounded (and in my opinion, racist) bills!

March 13, 2013. Native Americans and Wildlife Advocates condemn Montana’s treatment of wildlife.

March 11, 2013. A great (5 min) video tribute to Lamar Canyon Wolf “06 female” (#832).

March 11, 2013. Shades of Gray – Living with wolves. A 27 min film on the controversial removal of wolves from the Endangered Species Act. While it is regarded by many as one  of the most successful conservation efforts in history, state wildlife agencies in the Rockies have allowed a literal slaughter of the species following removal from ESA protections all to appease complaining big game hunters and whining ranchers (who, to be fair, are a minority of each constituent – just the very loud ones) – with little to no science to back them up. A very good, balanced show.

February 15, 2013. ‘Wolf Man’ (Rick McIntyre) believes new partners likely come from rival Yellowstone wolf packs. Very interesting article about wolves that I have watched while in the park. 755 used to be the ’06 female’s’ (#832) mate before 06 was shot.

February 14, 2013. Buffalo Field Campaign releases 2 short 30 second videos about bison and Montana and Yellowstone’s unwise attempts to slaughter these magnificent animals. Watch here: Video 1. Video 2.

January 30, 2013. Breaking news: I am in the midst of publishing “My Yellowstone Experience”. Please visit my Book Page to learn more!

January 18, 2013. The following is an important article about picking Raul Grijalva for Interior Secretary. I admit that I did not like Ken Salazar, a rancher, as the secretary. Our nation deserves Grijalva for protecting our environment. I was one of the signers of the letter mentioned in this article. Bison and wolves and all other animals will fare much better under Grijalva. Read the original letter here which was recently posted on the Wildlife News.

January 11, 2013. In some good news the state of Wyoming is offering a reward for the deaths of 2 poached wolves that were likely members of pack from Grand Teton National Park. The bad news: WY’s wolf management plan is straight from the 1800s where wolves can be shot on sight, year-round in 85% of the state. At least wolves have some protection  there; coyotes can be shoot in 100% of the state outside of national parks. Sarcasm intended…

January 10, 2013. Montana shows its true colors by wanting to “more aggressively” manage their wolves. My disdain for state wildlife agencies is pretty obvious. In my opinion, they should not be in charge of managing predators, especially wolves and coyotes – socially and ecologically important animals that they allow to be slaughtered in a literal sense.

January 4, 2013. Judge reverses closure to protect a measly 60 square miles outside of Yellowstone from wolf hunting. This shows you how much hate is involved with wolves and these anti-wildlife hunting groups. In my opinion, it also shows what a bunch of hypocrites Americans are. We go around and afford ESA listing to other countries’ animals like tigers, even lions, and tell them how to “manage” their wildlife… And then we have entrenched laws that allow maximum utilization of some of our most well known animals. People outside of the US must think we are disgusting and, quite frankly, a joke… Whenever Commissions have a public comment period, you know their minds are already made up (usually to increase hunting) – now that the opposite happens (i.e., to decrease hunting), this happens…
