2015 Field Updates

3 December 2015. A thousand Yellowstone bison may be killed – Time to end the slaughter. This is a great article on the travesty happening, despite public protest, on the edge of Yellowstone National Park. Here is also a great editorial on the topic. 6 December: Another story added in “The Counter Punch”: Bloodbath in Yellowstone: the Plan to slaughter 1000 bison. From the article: “To treat Yellowstone’s bison as political prisoners to promote the power control of the livestock industry is a national disgrace. ”

19 November 2015. As I wrote the below article, the following article also appeared: Book on Yellowstone bison takes Montana to task. A great article! From the article: “What does it say about the character and integrity of an elected political leader who deliberately ignores scientific facts and panders to private interests instead of the public good?”

19 November 2015. Yellowstone park proposes killing 1,000 bison this winter… This is downright angering. I immediately wrote a letter to the officials in charge of this carnage (emails: governor@mt.gov and Dan_Wenk@nps.gov). Please consider doing the same thing.

Dear Governor Bullock and Superintendent Wenk…

John’s wort is one of the most popular over-the-counter herbal supplements in the United States and can be used to relieve depressive symptoms in some people. djpaulkom.tv purchase levitra online It is important to take the dose at purchasing viagra online least half an hour before planning sexual activity and only once in a day or two. I am extremely disappointed that the state of MT is so intolerant of a native species, that you are having your partner in crime, Yellowstone, do your dirty work… That entire region relies on a minority influence (ranchers) to influence politics and wildlife management. Do you know how many more people come to the region to observe wildlife ALIVE, including bears, wolves, and bison.
Both the state of MT and YNP should immediately revise and change the outdated “interagency management plan” which could just as easily be called the “interagency slaughter and intolerance plan”. I used to spend 3-4 weeks per year in the region, contributing my money to well deserved private businesses and resources inside of YNP. I am gradually decreasing my frequency of visits in favor of other areas that are more tolerant of their neighbors. I urge the Governor to immediately increase year-round access to bison outside of Yellowstone and stop any slaughter until that happens. The bogus (and random) figure of needing 3,500 or fewer to then allow access outside the park is effectively blackmail by the MT Dept of Livestock, who should not be involved in this decision.
Until these changes occur, my visits to your great state will become less and less frequent.

2 November 2015. Famous Yellowstone grizzly approaching end… A great story about “Scarface” (aka #211), a bear I have observed on multiple occasions in Yellowstone.

6 October 2015. What’s next for Yellowstone Grizzly Bears… A good, detailed article.

14 September 2015. Some graduate students at Penn made this film, Impacts of Gray Wolf Reintroduction to Yellowstone National Park, about the wolves and their restoration and plight. It is a very detailed, interview-oriented film that lasts 1 hr 41 min. I would recommend watching it on Apple TV or the equivalent, as it is shown via You Tube.

28 August 2015. What’s next for the orphaned grizzly bear cubs (from Yellowstone Park). A good, detailed article by renowned science writer Todd Wilkinson and appearing in National Geographic. Added 29 August: Related article: Now that Yellowstone killed Blaze, what about her cubs?

14 August 2015. I just returned from 15 days in Yellowstone National Park and sadly a grizzly killed a man while I was out there. Here are a couple of stories, one from a Yellowstone Press Release confirming the attack, and the other titled “Death of a man…Death of a bear” which is a lengthy but well written article. August 16: Here is another article related to the bear attack and subsequent death of the bear.

14 July 2015. Yellowstone needs more beavers… The article discusses how the park is in trouble unless beavers return to more areas of the park to help restore wetlands.

13 July 2015. Yellowstone wolf update. July 2015. By Kathie Lynch… I spent 10 days in the park mid/late June and will spend another 15 in the park from late July to mid August. Kathie does a great job summarizing the park’s wolf activities, of which I get to spend 3.5 weeks enjoying this summer!

7 July 2015. Great article on one of the original Yellowstone wolves. Article is titled “Twenty-one was ‘the perfect wolf’: He was a legend — he never lost a fight, and he never killed a vanquished rival”. It appeared in Salon magazine and features my friend and renowned wolf research, Rick McIntyre. There are some great analogies to some of the more respected and revered men in human history.

17 January 2015. 20 years after reintroduction, Yellowstone wolves find balance. Another article on the 20th anniversary of wolf reintroduction to the park. This one is from the Billings Gazette.

16 January 2015. Kathie Lynch: Yellowstone wolf report on 20th anniversary. This is a great account of the first 20 years of wolves in Yellowstone. It is well worth the read.
